After the fall of Chanda and Munda, Shumbha and Nishumbha sent forth another formidable asura known as Raktabija.

He possessed an extraordinary boon. Whenever a drop of his blood touched the earth, another being equal to him in strength and appearance immediately arose.

The devas watched with concern as the battle commenced. Ambika Devi and the other divine powers struck Raktabija repeatedly with their weapons, yet each wound only caused countless new asuras to emerge.

As the battlefield became filled with countless forms resembling Raktabija, Ambika Devi addressed Kali Devi and instructed her to spread her mouth wide and consume the blood before it could reach the ground.

Kali Devi obeyed at once.

As Raktabija was struck by the weapons of the Divine Mothers, Kali Devi moved swiftly across the battlefield, drinking every drop of blood that flowed from his wounds and devouring the beings that arose from it.

Unable to replenish his strength any longer, Raktabija gradually weakened.

At last, deprived of the power granted by his boon, he was struck down and slain.

With his fall, the battlefield became quiet once more, and the devas rejoiced.

A Brief Reflection

Some devotees contemplate this episode as reminding seekers that harmful tendencies may increase when neglected.

Others simply remember it as another example of the Divine Mother's protection of the worlds and her unwavering resolve in overcoming forces that threaten dharma.
